Fitness Upgrade: Expect nothing

Heather Maio • November 17, 2020

and be grateful for everything...

It is easy to get tied up in the idea that your fitness routine needs to produce something.

A lower weight on the scale, a heavier deadlift.

A faster mile and smaller pants.

The problem is in expecting something we lose sight of all the good that is happening.

In worrying about the “shoulds” we forget all the things we GET to do. The miracle that being able to move your body is.

Upgrade your thinking around your fitness routine; stop worrying about what you think should be happening and start appreciating that it is able to happen in the first place.

When fitness is tied only to outcomes it become another chore.

Loses its magic and becomes something that tethers you to the idea that for movement to be “worth it” it must give you something tangible. Something that can be measured. But a feeling can’t be calculated, its felt…. In trying to measure every fitness related outcome you shut yourself off from the real magic; being able to listen and honor your body.

A few years ago, I developed a practice; before every workout I pause and say a silent Thank You to my body.

Sometimes it is just that; thank you. Thank you for showing up for me. Thank you for allowing me to do this.

Sometimes it is more, it is acceptance, asking for help achieving a new goal while accepting that whatever happens is a gift.

If your fitness routine is tied up in endless 21-day challenges or “must burn 600 calories” sessions, you will never appreciate the miracle movement is.

Which means that goal your chasing will always be out of reach. No one develops a practice from a place of self-hate.

Habits are made and formed when there is an immediate reward. I don’t want to piss in anyone’s Cheerios but anyone who has ever worked out knows that weight loss and strength gain does not happen overnight. It is a challenging process. If you are seeking out a pair of jeans to validate you, you are in for a rude awakening.

Falling in love with the process means just that. Fall in love with the process NOT the idea of the results.

If your fitness routine happens because you are in celebration of what your body can do, or in the least, in appreciation that you are able to move you will feel accomplished and validated every single time you finish a workout.

Every time you run twenty minutes. Every time you step off your yoga mat. Every time you re-rack the last dumbbell.

Expect nothing. Appreciate everything. Say thank to yourself every single time.

Stop chasing results and lean into the idea that the magic is in the doing, in the process, in showing up

Thank yourself.  Treat fitness as a gift (because it is) and watch the magic happen.
